ACADEMIC SERVICES

Student Learning Center

Student Learning Center offers academic support services free of charge to registered Summer Sessions students. Study groups as well as drop-in and by-appointment tutoring services are offered for a wide variety of Summer Session courses, including Biology 1A, Chemistry 1A, 3A & 3B, Physics 8A & 8B; most lower-division Math & Statistics, and Stat 134; Anthropology 1 & 3, History 7B, Political Science 1 & 2, and Psychology 1. In addition, Writing support is available for students with a paper assigned for any Summer Sessions course, including Reading & Composition courses, and Study Strategies consultations for time management, reading, test-taking and other general study strategies are also available to all students. Tutorial services are provided by experienced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as SLC professional staff. The goal of the Student Learning Center is to promote collaborative learning, and to enable students to build on their strengths and refine their understanding of concepts in a positive learning environment. Berkeley Language Center
Dedicated to the support of language instruction, the Berkeley Language Center offers a variety of services and houses an extensive collection of audio tapes, including programs in 100 languages. Laboratory services include listening and viewing stations, computer labs for class and individual use, an audio tape lending library, a recording studio, and a tape duplication service. In addition to language instruction tapes, library holdings include archival collections of linguistic fieldwork, and noteworthy University speeches and events. Libraries
Summer Sessions students have full access to one of the finest research libraries in the country. The UC Berkeley library system consists of Doe Library, the Moffitt Undergraduate Library, the Bancroft Library, (which houses rare books and western Americana) and over 20 other libraries
[library map] serving a range of academic disciplines. The collections of the University Library system include 8 million volumes, 89,800 journal titles, more than 70 million manuscripts, 400,000 maps, and 16,000 videos. To access the campus libraries you must be a registered Summer Sessions student with a Summer Sessions Photo ID Cards. Continuing UC Berkeley students may use their spring Photo ID Cards. Collection access, borrowing privileges, and hours of operation vary from library to library. For more information, consult the campus library website and look for informational leaflets at most campus libraries. Leaflets and web pages include maps of the library system, library hours, the Undergraduate's Guide to the Library, guides to research in specific subject areas, instructions on using library databases and access to library databases from your home or office, and much more. Check also for information on tours of the Main Library, and free drop-in classes on finding books, articles, and using the Internet. Computing
Computer facilities are available to Summer Session students enrolled in courses using specific instructional application software or the Internet. Use is by departmental reservation only, and access is restricted to registered students enrolled in the specified courses. Two microcomputer facilities are available to Summer Session students for general access. The Wheeler Microcomputer Facility, located at 211 Wheeler Hall, has 51 computers. The
Evans Microcomputer Facility, located in the basement of Evans Hall, has 60 computers. Both facilities support standard application software and are connected to the campus network and the Internet. Open hours are listed on the Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities website.

HEALTH SERVICES

University Health Services (UHS)
Registered Summer Sessions students are entitled to general outpatient medical care through the University Health Services (UHS), located at the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. UHS is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Services include examinations, lab tests, x-rays, pharmacy service, physical therapy, and treatment by physicians and nurse practitioners. Visits with a clinician are free and there are small co-pays for other services. An advice nurse is available during business hours for medical advice, phone or walk-in consultation. Counseling & Psychological Services (CPS)
University Health Services offers career, personal, and academic counseling to students through Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS). CPS provides individual interviews, couples counseling, testing services, occupational information, and group counseling. The CPS counselors are a multicultural group of social workers, psychologist's and psychiatrists. Students can come in to talk about deciding on a major, learning about interests and abilities, clarifying career goals and exploring options, coping with a personal crisis, dealing with concerns about relations with family or others, overcoming learning disabilities and concentration problems, or any other concerns. Optometric Care
As part of its academic program, the School of Optometry offers optometric care to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Clinicians and staff provide vision examinations, prescription eyewear, and contact lenses. Special services are offered for infants & children, video display terminals users, disabled patients, people with job related vision needs, and those who require safety eyewear. Evaluation and training is available in the areas of low vision, reading and sports vision binocular vision, and ocular photography. The University of California Eye Center has two locations: the School of Optometry in Minor Hall, just west of the Haas School of Business, and the University Health Center at 2222 Bancroft Way. TRANSPORTATION

Bay Area Public Transportation
If you're debating whether to bring your car this summer, know this: you don't really need it. The public transportation in Berkeley, which extends throughout the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, is efficient and inexpensive. Buses and subways, trains, and ferry boats are just some of the forms of transportation available to take you where you want to go. 511.org offers a more comprehensive listing of Bay Area public transit systems.

AC Transit is the bus system serving Alameda and Contra Costa counties (Berkeley is in Alameda county), with some service to San Francisco. All Summer Sessions students will receive a free Class Pass for AC Transit, providing unlimited use all summer long. The Class Pass is a sticker to be placed on the official Student Photo ID card, issued at the beginning of each session. For route information, call AC Transit at (510) 817-1717.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is the Bay Area's subway system which connects Richmond, Concord/Bay Point, Fremont, Dublin/Pleasanton, and San Francisco/Colma/Daly City. It operates from 4 a.m. to midnight weekdays, 6 a.m. to midnight Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to midnight Sundays. From the Berkeley station, BART can take you right into the heart of San Francisco in about 25 minutes! Call (510) 465-2278 for rates and schedules, or simply visit the downtown Berkeley BART station at Shattuck and Center streets.

The Alameda/Oakland Ferry leaves from Jack London Square in downtown Oakland and crosses the bay, stopping first at the Port of San Francisco and then at Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf. To get to Jack London Square, take BART from Berkeley to the 12th Street station; transfer to an AC Transit bus, or walk west on Broadway about 10 blocks until it dead-ends at Jack London Square. Signs will direct you to the Ferry terminal; call (510) 522-3300 for rate and schedule information.

MUNI is the network of buses, cable-cars, and Metro rail lines that serves San Francisco. For route and fare information, call (415) 673-6864.

Parking
For those who bring a car, there are many student lots located within a short walking distance of campus. Look for signs clearly labeled 'S' for Student permits. To park in the 'S' lots, you will need to purchase and display a Student Daily Permit (plastic hangtag) along with a daily permit ticket. Ask about the Parking Value Card when you buy your permit; a pre-paid amount, which you can use at the machines, is stored on the card. Overnight parking is not permitted, and rates are subject to change. Please observe all posted signs and restrictions. If you are staying in the University Residence Halls, you will need a Residence Hall permit beginning May 2008; inquire at your residence hall. OTHER CAMPUS SERVICES

Disabled Student Program (DSP)
The Disabled Students Program (DSP) located in 230 Cesar Chavez Center, provides a variety of services. Among them are academic support services, information on independent and community living, computer and adaptive technology resources, attendant referral, housing, and student support groups. Student Activities Services (SAS)
The energetic staff of Campus Life and Leadership works with Cal students from admission to graduation, encouraging participation in leadership, service, and other co-curricular activities. Professional and peer advisers also help interested students access SAS programs and other campus resources. Summer Sessions students take advantage of these and other services and programs:

Student organizations representing a variety of academic, professional, social, recreational, cultural, political, religious, and service interests.
Leadershipand organizational advising.
Volunteer opportunities through Cal Corps Public Services.

Student Affairs (Ombudsperson)
The Office of the Ombudsperson for Student Affairs provides informal and impartial conflict resolution services to all students, both graduate and undergraduate. The Ombudsperson operates as a designated neutral and independent "agent of justice" in University-related matters. All matters referred to this office are held in strict confidence. The only exception, at the sole discretion of the Ombudsperson, are those in which there appear to be imminent threat of serious harm.

Career Center
The Career Center instructs students about the career planning and job search process, and promotes linkages of students with employers and nationwide graduate and professional schools. The services of the Career Center include: Career and Job Search Information and Graduate and Professional School Information. The job and internship listings, including summer positions, as well as in person help are for UC students registered during the academic year in the previous spring or accepted for fall. Recreation
The Cal Rec Sports, a division of the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), offers free access to students enrolled in a summer Physical Education course when that course is taught in the RSF facility. Otherwise, students and their spouses or domestic partners can join the RSF at a discounted rate. Cal Rec Club memberships are valid June 1 - August 31. Membership privileges include use of RSF weight rooms with numerous free weight and Cybex stations; cardiovascular area with Elliptical trainers, treadmills, Crossrobics, rowers, lifecycles, and Stairmasters; free CAL aerobic classes before noon; handball, racquetball, tennis and squash courts; courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton; swimming pools, and more. Other privileges include use of lockers, towels, and showers.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports, includes Intramurals, Sports Clubs, outdoor lessons with Cal Adventures,aerobic and fitness classes with CAL Aerobics, personal trainers with One-on-One Personal Training, instructional classes with the CalFIT program and massage services with the Optimal Health Center. Special student rates available! Cal Rec Club memberships are sold at the RSF Cashier's station, 2301 Bancroft Way. Proof of student status or affiliation and photo ID are required when purchasing a membership. Continuing UC Berkeley students are required to have their Cal photo ID.

Cal Corps Public Service Center
The
Cal Corps Public Service Center is the campus office for student public service and leadership development programs, providing a number of volunteer, internship, and academic opportunities to support your Berkeley experience.
